Number Six

Most web sites about the 1960s 'Prisoner' television series provide details of the episodes, their order of transmission, the characters and the set, and offer interpretations of the meanings behind each, particularly their relevance to the world then and now.

This site is different.

This site explores what might have happened next. It provides an interesting and novel way in which a return series could have been made, one which retains all the strange and colourful mystery of the original series, in a related but different context. True to the original, each episode here has a title that encapsulates its story, and the series as a whole has an unexpected (?) twist at the end.

History

This project was first started in 1987, when my son Matthew, then 8 years old, watched 'The Prisoner' series on video with me for the first time, and at the end commented that it would be brilliant if another series could be produced. I agreed, but pointed out that Number 6 had escaped, and this made a new series based around 'The Village' difficult to produce as it had been destroyed in the process.

Matthew persisted with the discussion during the decoration of his playroom, and somehow the theme for a new series was born. Between us, Matthew and I roughed out some 12 basic story lines based on this theme, and then sat down and wrote the story lines into 10 more detailed episodes, each with its own title.

These episodes were sent to ITC, who owned the copyright of the series at that time, but sadly they were unwilling to consider taking the idea forward. They claimed to have ideas of their own for a re-make, but as everybody knows, nothing has come of this. The material lay dead for a decade until recently, when I realised that the web would make an ideal medium for publishing the episodes to a wider, and perhaps more interested, audience.

The Theme

So what is this different Theme which would allow ' The Prisoner' to return?

Well in the existing series, number 6 spends his time trying to escape from the 'Village', with the 'Village' doing all it can to stop him, and to find out why he resigned.

In 'the Prisoner's Return', number 6 lives his normal life in the real world, but finds out that the 'Village' has re-formed. He sets out to try and locate the new 'Village' in order to destroy it, and the new 'Villagers' use all their powers, tricks and technology in order to stop him. In other words, a complete reversal of the first series - in every way!

If you want to know what might have been, click on the buttons on the left, for each episode. They are in order, so if you want the story from beginning to end start with the top button and work down. Use your imagination to understand how the story might have looked on screen and enjoy it.
